BSNL has come up with three new Special Tariff Vouchers (STV) for those who want to stay in constant touch with their loved ones for free . STV 135 offers 400 minutes of free Local and STD  calls to any network in India with 30 days validity .
STV 59 offers Unlimited Local and STD calls to any BSNL number in India between 11 PM and 6 AM  with 15 days validity
STV 29  offers 300 minutes of free Local and STD calls to any BSNL number in India between 11 PM and 6 AM  with 30 days validity
These STVs will be available from 01-06-2012.

BSNL official gheraoed for disconnection of water supply

Udhagamandalam, May 30 (PTI): An Assistant General Manager of BSNL in Coonoor, about 18 km from here was gheroed by staff after water supply to their quarters was disconnected for non-payment of property tax arrears amounting to Rs 42 lakh. Staff members alleged that BSNL, which is deducting the tax amount from staff residing in the quarters, had failed to pay the property tax, for which the Municipality disconnected the water supply, putting them into hardship. Since there was no water for the last six days, the staff in Coonoor and also from Udhagamandalam decided to gherao the AGM in Coonoor, they said. Some staff members have gone to meet the Collector to sort out the issue, they said. BSNL officials were not available for comment. PTI COR NVM APR

BSNL abolishes roaming charges on prepaid scheme

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has abolished roaming charges, starting with one of its prepaid plans.
The move is the first such step by any telecom operator -- removing roaming charges without charging any particular rent or payment for doing so.

MTNL, BSNL in pact with the IAF

In what comes in as an interesting bit of news, reports confirm that both the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have come together to in a pact with the Indian Air Force (IAF). The pact will require both BSNL and MTNL to provide a host of services at concessional rates to the IAF, in exchange for space for installation of towers and equipment of both MTNL and BSNL, with which the IAF would comply.

Two held for availing WLL phone through fraudulent means, Rs 3.10L unpaid bill

The city police have arrested a youth who was allegedly involved in getting a wirless local loop (WLL) phone from the BSNL by furnishing a fake identify proof and fled without paying Rs 3.10 lakh for the calls he had made from the phone.

BSNL cable worth Rs 6 lakh looted

A group of unidentified persons looted BSNL's three cables of 1200 pairs from an under construction culvert near Saifi Nagar flag railway station on Friday night. The market value of the lifted cable has been estimated to be Rs 6 lakh. The cables were made of pure copper used in a number of items.
There were four guards deputed at the venue, but the robbers, 10 in number, were successful in looting the cables at the point of knife.
BSNL Indore senior general manager, G C Pandey, told TOI that services to around 750 BSNL subscribers were hit but services to few important subscribers were resumed. The work to restore proper functioning of the leaseline and broadband services is underway, he said.

Bandh Against BSNL in Kargil was a success, 6000 SIM Cards Collected

All the shops and establishments remained closed on the Bandh call against BSNLs poor Service, roads seems to be barren and there were no traffic on the roads.
From 18th of May a SIM Collection and Signature Campaign was started in Kargil by a group of volunteer youths to agitate against the poor service of BSNL and wastage of money of the people. The Campaign concluded with a protest rally, starting from Nishat Restaurant and passing through Islamia School Chowk and returning back o Nishat Restaurant in which thousand of people participated with play-cards and chanting slogans against BSNLs Poor Service. According to the group leader Mr Khurshid people dumped more than 6000 BSNL SIM cards with them as a mark of protest and termed the Campaign a success.

GSM operators add 6.50 mn users in April

GSM telecom operators added 6.50 million subscribers in April, taking the total user base to 670.57 million.The GSM subscriber base was 664.08 million in March.Leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel added 2.01 million users, highest in April, taking its total subscriber base to 183.29 million, according to the data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

BSNL engineer held for making video clips of women

A BSNL sub-divisional engineer (SDE), who was arrested on Monday on the charges of clandestinely making video clips of women, was on Wednesday again presented before a local court which remanded him on further remand of two days. The accused, Ram Kumar Sharma, claiming to be spiritual guru Prashant Yogi, was exposed after a woman from Bangalore detected a hidden camera inside a bathroom which was connected to his bedroom.

Cabinet set to okay national portability, end of roaming

The government is set to pave the way for an end to mobile roaming within the country and usher in a country-wide number portability scheme along with faster broadband speed proposed in the New Telecom Policy.
The Union Cabinet is scheduled to discuss the New Telecom Policy, which will replace a 13-year-old statement, along with a unified licence regime for all telecom services. The unified and class licences proposed by the telecom regulator along with migration of existing ones is different from what the government had planned to do in 2003.

USOF rejects TRAI proposal to offer Rs 2,750 crore subsidy to BSNL for rural landline business

The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) has rejected TRAI proposal to offer Rs 2,750 crore subsidy to BSNL for its rural landline business.

USOF, according to a report in Economic Times, said such a move will result in duplication of subsidy payout to the state-run telecom operator which is making huge losses.

USOF said it already has a running pact to provide Rs 1,500 of subsidy to BSNL to support its rural landline operations.

A move that would further strain the state-run telecom operator BSNL, the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) administrator has rejected a proposal to allot R2,750 crore to the public sector company as continued subsidy for maintaining wireline connections in rural areas installed before April 1, 2002.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is likely to compensate its customers whose telephones have been disconnected for over 10 days by waiving off the rental. Telephones of Rajeev Nagar, Indira Nagar and Rane Nagar residents have been dead from May 10 when the earth movers operated by the National Highway Authority of India used for widening the road, snapped the cables.

HCL, BSNL pact with Madras University

The University of Madras will soon enter into Memorandums of Understanding with BSNL and HCL to offer distance education and certificate courses to students and employees respectively. While the course training will be offered by the respective companies, the University of Madras will recognise the modules and provide the certificates. Director of the Institute of Distance Education (IDE), V Thangaraj, told Express that the courses are likely to be launched from the next academic year. According to him arrangements are being worked out to offer certificate programmes in telecommunications through BSNL’s Regional Telecom Training Centre in Maraimalai Nagar for students from nearby colleges. This will act as a value addition to degrees they are already pursuing at college.

BSNL Chennai Telephones has asked banks and post offices to accept cheques from its subscribers for the current bill amount even if the bills generated by the newly-introduced Call Detail Record (CDR) system display a different total bill amount. 

BSNL Karnataka revises tariff plan

BSNL has revised the tariff of promotional offer “New Karnataka Mitra”  in Karnataka Circle.
The plan costs Rs 29 and applicable for both 2G and 3G. 2G SIM cost Rs 20 and 3G SIM costs Rs 59. Free talktime of 50 minutes of loal calls and 100 SMS will be available for 30 days to the user.
All calls will be charged at 1.2p/minute. Local SMS will be charged at 50 p/SMS, National SMS at 60p/SMS and ISD SMS at Rs 5/SMS.
This plan will be available in Karnataka up to 3rd July 2012.

The number of telephone subscribers of BSNL and MTNL is increasing on year-by-year basis. However, the growth in case of BSNL & MTNL is less as compared to that of some private operators.

The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sh Milind Deora told Lok Sabha today that Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regularly reviews the performance of BSNL and MTNL to improve their financial health. Private telecom operators including Bharti Airtel, Idea owe over Rs 550 crore to BSNL: Government

Private operators such as Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone owe over Rs 550 crore in Inter- connect Usage Charges (IUC) to state-owned BSNL, Parliament was informed today.

"While Bharti Airtel has outstanding dues of Rs 169.07 crore, Idea, Reliance Communications Ltd and Vodafone have dues of Rs 121.36 crore, Rs 101.63 crore and Rs 49.54 crore, respectively," Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
