Mobile towers in Naxal zones

After losing over 200 telephone exchanges/towers in Maoists' attacks in the past five years, the government is planning to install 2,200 mobile towers in nine Naxal-affected states to overcome 'connectivity' problems by the end of this year. Public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will implement this plan in remote inaccessible areas in Red zones in consultation with states and central security forces.

"Union home ministry has already written to the department of telecommunication. The towers will be set up near establishments of security forces, police stations or other secured locations as the Maoists have often been targeting such towers in the past," said an official. He said the proposal would soon be submitted before the Union Cabinet for approval.
