BSNL to pay damages 13 years after phone caused two deaths

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has told Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to a customer in Godhra for delay in fixing damaged telephone lines. The recent judgment came after a wait of 13 years for the telecom behemoth's consumer.

Madhubala Kushwah in Godhra was watching television with her two little grandsons. The elder grandson, Madhvendra Singh, who was eleven years old then, touched the telephone lying on a nearby table. The telephone which had been dead for several days, had high voltage electric current that day and gave a deadly electric shock the boy. While the little boy got stuck to the electrified telephone, the current also passed on to his grandmother and his younger brother who were sitting next to him. Because of the high voltage, then the electric current got transferred on the floor and Madhubala also suffered an electric shock. In fact, the voltage was so high that a fire erupted and the sofa on which the trio were sitting caught fire.
